HDTV's Paul James Opens Series April 5-8

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- One of the country's most popular gardening gurus, HDTV's Paul James, is back with the inside scoop on home gardening during the 14th Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival at Walt Disney World Resort. James, also known as "The Gardener Guy," kicks off the Great American Gardener series, appearing twice daily at the Garden Odyssey Festival Center in Future World.

The Great American Gardener series, which continues each Friday-Sunday through June 3, is presented in partnership with the American Horticultural Society. Some of the most respected gardeners and nature experts in the country reveal tips and share entertaining stories during the presentations open to all Epcot guests at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Scheduled to appear:

  • Paul James (April 5-8) -- Host of HGTV's "Gardening By the Yard," James draws on his vast horticulture knowledge to answer gardening questions and provide helpful insights into America's top hobby.

  • Patricia Lanza (April 13-15) -- Known for her book Lasagna Gardening, Lanza shows guests how to grow gardens like pros using simple methods to improve poor Florida soils.

  • Clyde Butcher (April 20-22) -- Renowned wilderness photographer Clyde Butcher explores the natural environment through stunning black and white images and offers outdoor photography tips.

  • Tom Turpin (April 27-29) -- Award-winning professor of entomology at Purdue University and founder of the "Bug Bowl" spreads the buzz on the benefits of insects.

  • Tom MacCubbin (May 4-6) -- Central Florida gardening personality, author of The Edible Landscape and co-author with Georgia Tasker of Florida Gardener's Guide (2nd edition), MacCubbin talks about edible landscapes.

  • Raymond Western (May 11-13) -- A Guerlain perfume specialist, Western takes guests on a tour of the world of fragrance and the intimate relationship between plants and perfume, such as those displayed at the Fragrance Garden located at the France pavilion.

  • Robert Bowden (May 18-20) -- Gardening expert and director of the lush Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando, Bowden gives the scoop on plants with unusual textures, habits and colors and tells how to grow an interesting and fun garden.

  • Gary Alan (May 25-27) -- A landscape designer, as well as TV and radio personality, Gary Alan presents unique ideas and methods to help you create your own magical landscape.

  • Georgia Tasker (June 1-3) - Feature writer for The Miami Herald and author of Wild Things -- The Return of Native Plants and Florida Gardeners Guide, Tasker will offer tips for growing orchids.

17 Musical Acts Bring Cool Vibes to Epcot April 5-June 3

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Retro-hit makers like Petula Clark, Jose Feliciano, Peter & Gordon and The Box Tops rev up the Flower Power concert series April 5-June 3 at the 14th annual Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival in Walt Disney World Resort.

The spring shower of hit songs from the 1960s and '70s begins with opening-weekend performances by Paul Revere and the Raiders, known for a slew of singles like "Good Thing" and "Birds of a Feather." Other oldie chart-toppers featured by some of the festival's 17 musical acts include "Happy Together," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" and "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter." B.J. Thomas, Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone, The Guess Who and The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie are among returning acts to appear during the 60-day Flower Power concert series. Davy Jones will perform again this year during the popular Mother's Day Weekend.

Flower Power concerts strike a lively, nostalgic chord daily at America Gardens Theatre at 5:45, 7 and 8:15 p.m. and are included with regular Epcot admission. Here's the lineup*:

  • April 10-14 -- Tony Orlando in Concert "Tie a Yellow Ribbon"

  • April 15-18 -- The Buckinghams "Kind of a Drag"

  • April 25-28 -- The Tokens "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"

  • April 29-May 1 -- Peter & Gordon (New) "A World Without Love"

  • May 2-3 -- Jose Feliciano (New) "Light My Fire"

  • May 4-5 -- Petula Clark (New) "Downtown"

  • May 6-10 -- Nelson featuring the songs of Ricky Nelson "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection"

  • May 11-15 -- Davy Jones "Daydream Believer"

  • May 16-19 -- B.J. Thomas "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head"

  • May 20-22 -- Grass Roots featuring Rob Grill "Midnight Confessions"

  • May 23-25 -- The Guess Who "American Woman"

  • May 26 -- The SOS Band (New) "Take Your Time (Do It Right)"

  • May 27-30 -- Gary Puckett "Over You"

  • May 31-June 3 -- Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone "Henry the 8th"

Butterfly Bounty, Pizza Garden, Fairy Maze Featured April 5 Through June 3

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Children can mingle with hundreds of colorful butterflies, scramble around Tinker Bell's Fairy Garden maze and dig into some pizza gardening during the 14th annual Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival April 5 through June 3 at Walt Disney World Resort.

And who can resist a pirate and his foils? Kids won't want to miss the swashbuckling scene at the Epcot main entrance featuring Captain Hook in full floral regalia aboard a blooming pirate ship topiary. Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and Stitch from "Lilo & Stitch" also will appear at the entrance topiary. Other beloved characters making topiary appearances throughout the park are Pirate Mickey Mouse, Princess Minnie Mouse, a towering Pirate Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck, Belle and her Beast, Cinderella and Prince Charming, and stars of the classic Disney film "The Lion King."

Everyone knows kids love to be creative. At the expanded Growing Future Gardeners exhibit, children and their parents can get creative ideas for starting or enhancing their own backyard gardens. And there's even a pizza garden designed to produce herbs and veggies needed to make a healthful, mouth-watering pie. When it's time to burn off some energy, the maze at Tinker Bell's Fairy Garden and the playsystem at Pluto's Play Zone offer novel activities for youngsters.

Entertainment is on tap for the whole family throughout the event, with highlights including themed weekend activities and the Flower Power concert series starring pop hit-makers of the 1960s and '70s. Thirty million multi-hued blossoms will paint the Epcot landscape with color. Just for kids:

  • Tinker Bell's Fairy Garden (Imagination Walkway), with a twinkling Tinker Bell topiary, playground, fairy maze and tunnel crawl, plus Pluto's Play Zone (Test Track Walkway) with fun-filled Evos playsystem.

  • Growing Future Gardeners (Germany pavilion), a collection of gardens where parents and children can get ideas for their own gardening activities such as a pizza garden planted with herbs to make pizza. Kids can also enjoy a new play area at the hands-on exhibit.

  • Daily ladybug releases (1 and 3 p.m.) at Growing Future Gardeners (Germany). Children can participate with each release.

  • Minnie's Magnificent Butterfly Garden (Test Track Walkway), where hundreds of butterflies inhabit a screened-in gazebo lush with foliage and color.

  • Mower Mania (Future World East), allows you to guide a radio-controlled lawnmower through a skill course.

  • Kidcot Fun Stops at every World Showcase country that entertain children with a lineup of creative activities linked to each country's culture.

Special festival weekends for kids and their families, including the new Cinco de Mayo Weekend May 4-6 with special kids' activities at the Mexico pavilion; plus Garden Party Weekend April 13-15; I Dig Bugs Weekend April 27-29; the popular Mother's Day Weekend May 11-13; and the Characters in Bloom Weekend May 18-20.
