Mickey Monitor Fall 2007 Parades Fireworks & More

This fall Disney has more happening than ever before Pirates ... fireworks ... princesses ... and more fireworks

A look at the pyro-techniques at Disney's Pirate and Princess Party

Everyone's thrilled that Disney's Pirate and Princess Party is combing back for more Magic Kingdom nights this fall.  It's another chance to be a part of the fun, from lessons in being a royal guard to dances with Ariel's friends, as well as enough games, laughs and Disney Character meetings to fill a scrapbook.

Plus a fantastic fireworks finale

For many Guests, the Magic, Music and Mayhem fireworks spectacular is a major reason to attend.  "I wrote it to be an event within the event," said Walt Disney Creative Entertainment Show Director Chris Oyen.  "All of us in Creative Entertainment were looking for a real story with a beginning, middle and end.  The first challenge was figuring out how to blend the themes of pirates and princesses.

"It turned out to be simple: why would pirates want to visit a magical castle?  To capture it, of course!  So we begin with Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, joined by Flora, Fauna, Merryweather and King Triton.  This leads to a waltz that is 'danced' by the fireworks in the sky.  Our musical director and arranger, Steve Skoija and Gordon Goodwin, really outdid themselves with their rendition of great Disney songs.

"But Captain Hook summons up force of pirate behavior.  Now as this has been happening, we've been widening our sky canvas.  The explosive images have spread out like a wide-screen move.  Triton tries to stop them and regain control, and there's an amazing battle with what appear to be mortar shots hitting the Castle.  These are some of the most daring effects we've ever attempted, but the story really led us to come up with new ways to use the technology.

"Just when Hook things he's won, our live Tinker Bell takes victory right out of his grasp!  Her entrance is really motivated by the action of the story.  We may have asked her to fly for us before, much as she used to do on Disney TV shows, but this is perhaps the first time she's taken such a dramatic role in vanquishing the villains."

And a pixie shall lead them

Guests are truly inspired by the show in ways no one had ever expected.  "One of the most gratifying things for me was the hear people laugh!" Chris said.  "With fireworks, we can usually get folks to gasp and ooh and aah, but this is different.  Shows like Wishes and IllumiNations taught us we had the ability to make an emotional impact through music, fireworks and lighting from a number of directions within and around the Park.  This takes it to a whole other level."

Mickey Monitor Secret - In the fireworks patterns, look for the hearts within hearts at the end of the waltz number.  When the pirates arrive, look for a skull and crossbones image.

Sprites, 'bops and other fun for tots

Little Ones Travel Time brings special entertainment and magic

August 26 - October 28, Little Ones Travel Time brings Playhouse Disney in Concert, presented by Huggies and Pull-Ups brands, to Disney's Hollywood Studios, when Johnny and the Sprites, Dan Zanes, Doodlebops and other greats perform live Thursday through Sunday - plus Little Ones Magic Hour, when Magic Kingdom Park opens one hour early on select days to Disney Resort Guests for an extra hour of select Fantasyland attractions and playtime with Disney Characters.  Guess what?  Tony-nominated Johnny and the Sprites co-creator and star John Tartaglia is a Disney Passholder just like you!

MM: How long have you been a Disney Passholder?

JT: I've been one since '96!  But I've been a HUUUGE Disney Parks fan since I first visited at age ten.  Like so many Passholders, I really care about the Parks.

MM: What was it like performing live at Disney's Hollywood Studios?

JT: A blast! It's so neat to bring the show to children and their families live and see their reactions.  It was one of the best experiences we ever had.  None of us wanted to leave.

MM: Your Playhouse Disney in Concert series show is one of our most elaborate, because the setting of your TV show was re-created on the stage.

JT: That's really exciting.  Kids and their families get to feel that they're the most special people in the world because they get to visit our world, and see where Ginger, Basil and Johnny live.

MM: You're a Passholder and a Disney star with a hit show in its second season, a nationwide tour and an album on the way.  You really are part of the family!

JT: I remember going to the Parks as a kid and imagining how magical it would be to be a part of it someday.  So when we did our first concert, I walked out on stage and realized I was part of this now.  It was very emotional.  To bring that experience to families, as part of Disney, is a dream come true.  It really is.

Playhouse Disney in Concert and Little Ones Travel Time are parts of Disney's Magical Beginnings, presented by Playskool, making Disney vacations with small children easier and more fun than ever all year-round.

An Eye for Comedy

Passholders laugh it up at a very special preview

One of the many perks of being a Disney Passholder is being able to experience new Walt Disney World attractions before the rest of the world does.  Recently, we welcomes folks to get the first laughs at the new Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor inspired by Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc.

Christine Collura surprised her entire family with a Walt Disney World trip from New York to see the new attraction.  The children loved it, especially her husband Mike's nephew, Marty.  "I love the way the characters interact with the audience," he said.

Laughter as a renewable energy resource

In the attraction Mike Wazowski is the host, but the audience is really the key to everything, because it is their laughter that will power the city of Mostropolis.

Guests are part of the comedy, too, because the comic creatures trade quips with young and old alike.  You can even use your cell phone to text message jokes to them before the show.

The gang's all here

Michelle & Jeff Markstrom, their friends Julie & Tom Tuggle and their children read each Mickey Monitor article about the new attraction with eager anticipation.  When they heard about the special preview, they all shared the fun together.

"This attraction was great," said Michelle.  "Love the jokes and the fact that no two shows are exactly alike.  We will definitely come back to see it again."  Sounds like a monster hit for Passholders.

The Buzz

New Ships Announced for Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Cruise Line fleet is about to get much bigger.  Recently, Disney announced two new ships scheduled to launch in 2011 and 2012.

These yet-to-be-named vessels will be two decks taller than the existing Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, with each of the two ships boasting 1,250 staterooms.  The additions will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line.

Similar to the original Disney Cruise Line ships, the new ships will be a modern interpretation of classic ocean liners of the 1930s.  Look in future editions of the Mickey Monitor for more specific design plans and itineraries for the new ships, or visit disneycruise.com.

It's a ghoul thing ...

New decor gives Passholders even more to enjoy this year

There are more magic Kingdom treats than ever this year at Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.  In addition to the trick-or-treating, dancing, Disney Characters, Mickey's "Boo to You" Halloween Parade, the Happy HalloWishes fireworks spectacular and unlimited enjoyment of select attractions, you'll experience magical new details during your evening of fun.

"It starts as you enter the Park"
"In the Mickey floral display out front, Mickey's now a pumpkin, all lit up," said Entertainment Director Laura Offerdahl of Disney Creative Entertainment.  "After yo walk under the train station, you'll see that the citizens of Main Street, U.S.A. got together to decorate.

Not-so-scary scarecrows
"You'll see larger-than-life scarecrows with pumpkin heads," Laura continued.  "There's a lady scarecrow holding a candy apply and a lollipop.  The baker has a little apron, a bag of sugar, a big spoon and chef hat.  A baseball player scarecrow suggests Mickey's Athletic Shop and another holds a toy because she's from the Emporium.  Our favorites are the mayor and society lady scarecrows."

But wait until you see the statues and Cinderella Castle
"At the hub, we'll have statues of the characters in costumes with themed pumpkins," Laura said.  "Minnie's a princess, Mickey's a jester doing a handstand, Pluto's in a Three Musketeers-style outfit and Donald is a knight."

Cinderella Castle lighting effects will create different moods on a regular basis throughout the evening.  "It's very exciting to add all this for Halloween Guests," Laura said.  "They'll have so much fun being surrounded by it all!"

Check out our page on Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for ticket and other information.

There's no turning back now!

Eerie enhancements are materializing at The Haunted Mansion

When The Haunted Mansion reopens this fall, you'll notice that strange things occurred.  "We increated the feeling of prescence and movement between Guests and ghosts," Said Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Show Producer Kathy Rogers.

Digital audio will give our old pal the Ghost Host the power to hop around in the stretch room, and to dart back and forth on your "doom buggy."  In the gallery, a lightning storm will cause the portraits to become more and more ghostly!

Even disembodied medium Madame Leota's had a face-lift -- literally.  Her crystal ball will float in midair!  In the attic, look for an extra-creepy bride with a string of grooms, all pictured before her.  Each undergoes a change as the bouquet in her hand changes to an ... well, we just can't give it all away!

Passholder Priority Access Days!
Imagine presenting your valid Passholder ID at The Haunted Mansion and bypassing the regular queue line! Make sure you're registered at disneyworld.com/passholder so you don't miss our email with select dates and details.

Joe Kaminski -- Festival of the Masters signature artist

Every year, Disney artists compete to design the signature artwork for the annual Festival of the Masters art show at Downtown Disneyarea.  This year's winning submission came from Joe Kaminski, someone whose creative abilities were, until now, more firmly rooted in the arena of words.

MM: What inspired you to start painting?

JK: Four years ago, I became a writer at Disney's Yellow Shoes Creative Group, the in-house advertising agency for Disney Parks worldwide.  Naturally, I was surrounded by all sorts of creative people.  Not just fabulous writers, but brilliant artists, art directors, designers and photographers as well.  Always inspired, I began teaching myself to draw and paint Disney Characters as best I could, of course.

MM: What did you do next?

JK: I started posting my creations around the office -- just for fun.  It would usually get a good chuckle or two from some of the veteran artists.  But eventually, i actually started to get a few compliments, constrictive criticism and supportive advice from friends and my Art Director buddy Tom Shumilak, who won our Festival of the Masters competition 4 or 5 times.

MM: What was the real inspiration behind 100-watt Mickey?

JK: I did this piece because my children love Mickey.  And because I have over 40 gallons of paint lying around my home.  The idea for the lightbulb came from when I was painting in my garage one night and the light above me burnt out.

MM: So the lightbulb burning out actually made your lightbulb turn on?

JK: I guess you could say that.  An now it's really a thrill to see "my winning artwork" (though I never imagined I would ever use that phrase) all over posters and merchandise and stuff 00 and even signing the art at the Festival.  It's very cool.
